Pregnancy Acne, Skin Tags, Incontinence: Pregnancy Symptoms Nobody Warns You About

Pregnancy is a wild ride, we know. While glowing skin and baby kicks often steal the spotlight, some symptoms sneak in quietly (or not so quietly) and catch mums off guard—side effects that don’t exactly make the highlight reel. If you’ve been surprised by unexpected acne flare-ups, the sudden appearance of skin tags, or even the occasional oops moment? Let’s just say you’re not the first one.

These lesser-known side effects of pregnancy can feel frustrating or embarrassing, but they’re incredibly common and usually temporary. In this article, we unpack what’s going on, why they happen, and how to cope with these sneaky symptoms.

Mothercare is here to support you with care and understanding every step of the way.

1. Pregnancy Acne

Many mums expect a pregnancy glow. But for some, acne crashes the party instead. Rising hormones, especially increased androgen levels, crank up oil production. This can lead to clogged pores and pesky pimples.

The Reason:

  • Hormones boost oil gland activity

  • Skin can become more sensitive or reactive

  • On top of it all, stress and lack of sleep can worsen things

The Fix:

  • Adhere to gentle, pregnancy-safe skincare products. Avoid harsh acne treatments without your doctor’s OK.

  • Cleanse twice daily with a mild cleanser. Avoid scrubbing at all costs.

  • Keep hair clean and off your face to reduce oil buildup.

  • Moisturise with non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) products.

  • Try spot treatments with natural ingredients like aloe vera, but patch test first!

🧖🏻 Remember: acne usually clears up postpartum. And your skin is doing its best while your body is busy growing a tiny human.

2. Skin Tags

Not exactly talked about at baby showers, are they? Skin tags are small, soft growths that can emerge during pregnancy, often in places like the neck, underarms, or around the belly. They’re benign and painless, but can be annoying or even itchy.

The Reason:

  • Hormonal changes can stimulate skin cell growth

  • Friction from growing belly or skin folds can cause skin tags

The Fix:

  • Keep skin folds clean and dry.

  • Avoid tight clothing or friction in sensitive areas.

  • If a skin tag bothers you, mention it at your next checkup. Sometimes your doctor can remove it safely after pregnancy.

☝🏻 Fun fact: skin tags often disappear on their own after baby arrives, shrinking or falling off entirely.

3. Incontinence

Leaking when you sneeze, laugh, or exercise? Pregnancy incontinence is more common than you might think, and definitely not as embarrassing as mums make them out to be.

The Reason:

  • A growing uterus presses on the bladder

  • Pregnancy hormones relax pelvic floor muscles

  • Extra weight adds pressure during daily activities

The Fix:

  • Practise pelvic floor exercises (hello, Kegels!) daily to strengthen muscles.

  • Don’t hold it in for too long. Make it a point to empty your bladder regularly.

  • Wear breathable, absorbent pads designed for pregnancy.

  • Avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks, which can irritate your bladder.

  • Chat with your healthcare provider if leakage is heavy, sudden or unmanageable.

👶 You might find your symptoms improve after the baby arrives, especially with guided pelvic floor rehab.

4. Nosebleeds and Congestion

Increased blood volume and hormones can swell nasal tissues, causing congestion and nosebleeds. A study found that 20% of pregnant women experience nosebleeds, as compared to 6% of non-pregnant individuals who get them.

The Reason:

  • Increased blood flow to the mucous membranes in your nose

  • Hormonal changes resulting in swelling of nasal tissues

  • Dry or irritated nasal passages from pregnancy hormones

  • Fragile blood vessels prone to bleeding

The Fix:

  • Use a humidifier or keep a bowl of water near your bed to increase surrounding moisture.

  • Saline nasal sprays are great for soothing dry or irritated nasal passages. Just be sure to use pregnancy-safe options.

  • Don’t pick your nose or blow too hard, both of which can exacerbate irritation.

  • Try sleeping with your head slightly elevated to decrease swelling and promote drainage.

💧 Staying well hydrated also helps keep the mucous membranes moist and prevents congestion.

5. Excessive Saliva (Ptyalism)

If you suddenly find yourself swallowing more often or dealing with excess saliva, especially in the first trimester, you’re not alone. Ptyalism, or excessive saliva production, is another pregnancy symptom that can catch you by surprise, as it has with many mums.

The Reason:

  • Hormonal fluctuations overstimulate salivary glands

  • Often associated with nausea and morning sickness

  • Increased saliva production serves as a reflex response to queasiness

The Fix:

  • Sip water frequently to help keep your mouth comfortable. Swallow excess saliva.

  • Chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sour candies can encourage swallowing and keep saliva in check.

  • Avoid spicy or overly acidic foods that may trigger more saliva production.

🧻 Yes, this symptom often eases up after the first trimester. Keep a small pack of tissues handy for those moments when things get a little drippy.

6. Varicose and Spider Veins

Pregnancy can bring on varicose and spider veins, which most often appear on the legs. However, they also sometimes pop up around the pelvis or vulva. Many mums find these swollen, twisted veins uncomfortable and unsightly, but they’re really a natural part of pregnancy.

The Reason:

  • Growing uterus puts pressure on veins in your pelvis and legs

  • Pregnancy hormones relax vein walls, making them prone to stretching

  • Increased blood volume slows blood flow back to the heart

The Fix:

  • Elevate your legs whenever you can to improve circulation and reduce swelling.

  • Compression stockings can be very helpful. They gently squeeze your legs to keep blood flowing properly.

  • Avoid standing for long periods; take frequent breaks to walk around and stretch.

  • Try gentle prenatal yoga or leg stretches to keep blood moving.

🧦 Consider compression stockings your stylish, supportive sidekick for pregnancy comfort!

7. Linea Nigra

You might notice a dark line running vertically from your belly button to your pubic bone. This is called the linea nigra, a completely normal and harmless pigmentation change during pregnancy. In fact, before the linea nigra “showed up”, it was actually the linea alba—something everyone has, but usually too faint to see.

The Reason:

  • Pregnancy hormones increase melanin production

  • Melanin causes darkening of the skin in certain areas

  • Hormonal changes trigger pigmentation along the midline of your belly

The Fix:

  • The linea nigra usually appears during the second trimester and tends to fade several months after delivery.

  • Though it looks striking, it’s nothing to worry about and doesn’t require treatment.

  • Protect your skin by applying gentle moisturisers and using sunscreen if your belly is constantly exposed to sunlight.

🤰🏻 Think of the linea nigra as your pregnancy’s natural “beauty mark”. It’s a little reminder of the journey your body is on, and something to be loved.

8. Hair Changes

Hair changes during pregnancy can feel like a rollercoaster ride. Many mums enjoy thicker, shinier hair, but some experience thinning or unexpected shedding, especially after the baby arrives. Others even report straight or more textured hair.

The Reason:

  • Pregnancy hormones keep hair in the growth phase longer than usual

  • Hormone levels drop after delivery, prompting shedding

  • Possible underlying issues like thyroid changes or iron deficiency can affect hair health

The Fix:

  • Keep your scalp healthy by using mild, pregnancy-safe shampoos and conditioners.

  • Avoid heat styling tools and harsh chemical treatments during pregnancy.

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support hair health.

  • If hair shedding feels excessive or concerning, talk to your healthcare provider, as they can offer guidance and check for underlying issues.

✂️ A little extra TLC for your tresses will help keep your mane glowing through the ups and downs of pregnancy.
