There’s something special about welcoming your little one in the summer months; lighter evenings, warmer days, and plenty of opportunities for fresh air. But summer babies also bring their own set of needs, from staying cool at home to keeping safe in the sun when you’re out and about.
We’ve been helping parents prepare for decades, and we know that a little preparation can make those first weeks with your baby feel more comfortable and stress-free.
Here’s our guide to summer essentials for baby.
Clothing for a Summer Baby
Light, breathable clothing is key. Babies can’t regulate their body temperature like adults, so it’s important to keep them cool and to protect their delicate skin.
Must-haves for summer:
- Short-sleeved bodysuits – cotton is best as it’s soft and breathable
- Light sleepsuits or rompers – perfect for day naps or warm evenings
- Cardigan or light blanket – for cooler evenings or air-conditioned spaces
In hot weather, your baby might only need to wear a nappy and vest indoors.
Keeping Cool at Home
Newborns and young babies are most comfortable in a room temperature of 16–20°C. In the summer, rooms can get warmer, so it’s worth preparing in advance.
Helpful items for summer comfort:
- Room thermometer – so you can monitor temperature and adjust layers accordingly
- Blackout blinds or shades – keep the sun out to help maintain a cooler room – closing the curtains early in the day can help prevent heat from building in the room
- Electric fan – make sure to keep it well out of reach and never direct it directly at your baby
Keeping Cool at Night
Overheating while asleep can increase the risk of SIDS, so it’s really important to prevent your baby from getting too hot during the night. On really hot nights, your baby may only need a cotton sheet on their bed. Lightweight 0.5–1 tog sleep bags are ideal for warm nights and are helpful if your baby is a wriggler or tends to kick the covers off.
Travel and Days Out
Summer days are perfect for walks, picnics, and family visits, but babies need extra protection from heat and sun.
Up to six months old, your baby’s skin does not contain enough melanin to provide any natural protection from the sun, so your baby should not be in direct sunlight. Babies over six months old should avoid direct sunlight as much as possible, especially during the hottest hours of the day (11 am–3 pm). Remember, protecting your baby’s eyes from the sun is also important.
Keeping Safe in the Car
The inside of a car can get hot very quickly, so use car window blinds to block out the sunlight and help keep your baby at a safe and comfortable temperature.
If you’re taking your baby out in the pram or pushchair, use a sunshade or parasol to keep them out of direct sunlight. Look for products with added protection. A stroller fan can also be useful on hot and humid days.
Travel Essentials
- Sunshade for their pram or pushchair – a UV-protective shade is a must-have for summer outings (don’t cover your pram with a cloth for shade as this can lead to overheating)
- Lightweight baby carrier or sling – choose breathable fabrics to prevent overheating
- Clip-on fan for pram – battery-operated and safe for baby use
- Sun cream – for babies over 6 months; under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun
- Baby sunglasses – ensure they provide UVA and UVB protection
- Sun hats – choose UPF fabrics for protection
Feeding a Summer Baby
Babies may want to feed more often in hot weather to stay hydrated, especially if you’re breastfeeding. For formula-fed babies, ensure feeds are made safely and kept cool during travel. If you have any concerns about your baby’s feeding, it’s best to seek professional medical advice.
Useful items:
- Insulated bottle bags – to keep milk at the right temperature
- Cool bag for feeds – handy for expressed milk, formula, or snacks for older babies
- Water bottle for yourself – you need to keep hydrated too, especially if you’re breastfeeding
