CONGRATULATIONS!
Your baby’s finally arrived, what next…?At
last, your newest addition is here and you’re proudly
travelling back home from hospital, baby securely
fastened into their brand new, rearward facing car seat.
So what happens now? Don’t worry, you’ll pick it up as
you go along, and we hope these ‘nuggets of information’
will help a little.
- It’s good to talk
For your baby, watching your face while you talk is
the best entertainment they could ask for. As babies
recognise their mother’s voice from birth, your baby
will be interested in just about anything you say,
especially if you use ‘Motherese’, that high-pitched
sing-song way of talking. The childlike tone and
repetitive speech patterns help stimulate brain
development.
- Go for a short stroll
When you’re good and ready, try taking your baby for a
short walk. Just around the block is fine at first.
It’s a really good way to get used to your pram and a
gentle reintroduction to a little aerobic exercise.
- Move to the beat
Most babies love music, so what better way to enjoy
yourselves than by turning on the radio and gently
swaying to beat. It’s the perfect introduction to
rhythm!
- Don’t forget your other children
If you already have young children, there’s nothing
more natural than a little bit of jealousy at first.
You can try to counteract this beforehand by including
your toddler in plans – choosing names perhaps. When
your baby arrives give your toddler lots of cuddles
and let them know that your love for them has not
change. He or she is still as special and lovely as
they ever were. Don’t leave them out – try to split
babycare duties with your partner to make exclusive
time each day for your older child.
