Baby clothing
Children’s clothing from 18 months to 3 years – development needs and relevant stages

Clothing considerations for this age group include:-

  • Children usually start to take an interest in using the toilet or potty at around 2 to 3 years of age. For toilet training you will need a few essential items such as waterproof pants with terry lining and easy clothing for quick undressing are extremely useful at this stage. This is a matter of trial and error - any new skill requires time, help and encouragement and for your child to be allowed to make mistakes – all part of learning.

Let your child set the pace – it’s worth it and prevents further problems developing later. If it becomes a battle of wills – your child will always be the one who suffers, let your child feel in control (with a few gentle reminders from you) and it will be over before you know it.

  • Starting playgroups or nursery – is another major milestone for your child, an enjoyable but can be rather daunting. Clothing requirements will depend on the nursery – some even have their own uniform policy whereas others suggest easy dressing items such as joggers, leggings as there will be lots of messy activities - great for your child but save any special outfits for another day.

  • Shoes with easy to fastenings can be helpful and some playgroups require plimsoles for indoor play. Remember to take a spare set of clothes, including socks, pants and t–shirt with name tags on (or use permanent markers) all contained in a kit bag for your child’s coat peg - again with name clearly marked. This is the start of naming your child’s clothes by the time your child gets to secondary school you will have perfected the art!

  • Fitting children for shoes can be challenging. Children find it hard to communicate what feels right for them e.g. too big or too small when they are very young - so make sure you try on the shoes and get them to walk around for a short while to check for any slippage near the heal when walking or toes too close to the end.

  • To help prevent older children complaints about labels – we have no labels on the necks or waistbands on our clothing. Less for little ones to have a moan about when they get dressed in the morning.

  • Stretchy necklines and poppered neck openings - for easy dressing to help with reluctant dresses and for when you need to dress your little one quickly.

  • Soft back embroideries prints on t-shirts and prints on dresses etc... so will not rub again your child skin and cause any irritation.
